Stand Up for Café Sankofa & the Southside Community

Why We're Here

Café Sankofa is a nonprofit community center on the Southside of Syracuse that provides affordable space for health and wellness programs, food distributions, cultural events, and community gatherings. When the I-81 viaduct was built through the 15th Ward, it destroyed a thriving Black neighborhood. Café Sankofa is working to rebuild what was lost — one program, one partnership, and one gathering at a time.

But Café Sankofa is facing financial challenges it didn’t create. The organization inherited tax debt from a previous board, and without relief, this burden threatens the center’s ability to keep serving the community. We’re asking the Syracuse Common Council to support Café Sankofa by addressing the structural barriers that make it harder for community-rooted nonprofits to survive.

Your letter matters. When elected officials hear directly from the people they represent, it makes a difference. A stack of personal letters from community members is one of the most powerful tools we have.

Tips For Writing Your Letter

Be personal.

Share why Café Sankofa or the Southside community matters to you. Your own story is your strongest argument.

Be specific.

Ask the Council to take action — whether that’s supporting tax relief for community nonprofits, investing in Southside organizations, or recognizing Café Sankofa’s work.

Be brief.

One page is plenty. A clear, sincere letter is more effective than a long one.

Be respectful.

Even if you’re frustrated, a polite tone goes further.

Include your name and address.

Councilors pay attention to constituents in their district. If you live in Syracuse, say so
